Yes, Heraklion is absolutely a city that any traveler should visit. During our time here, we had so much fun.
Whether you're a traveling as a family, a couple, or a backpacker, this city has a lot to offer. Any local will tell you what makes it special is the terrific museums and attractions and great food.
Heraklion is a large port city, and the capital of the island of Crete. It's also your most likely arrival or departure point on the island. While many travelers immediately head on to their resort elsewhere on the island, those who linger for a day or two in Heraklion will enjoy world-class historical sights and authentic Cretan cuisine.

1. Museums and Attractions
The city is filled with historical sights and archeological ruins. The impressive Palace of Knossos is a must-see, but also make sure you visit the Koules Fortress, the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, and the Natural History Museum of Crete.
2. Food
The city is home to countless Cretan restaurants that range in style and budget. There are fine dining restaurants as well as local dives with casual street food. The restaurants reflect the island's multi-cultural past with many styles and flavors available.
3. Nightlife
The city has some of the best nightlife on the island of Crete. There are many all-night clubs as well as bars that stay open until 2 or 3 in the morning. In particular, there are many British tourists hanging out at the clubs and bars.
4. Beaches
You'll find world-class beaches just outside of town, if you're willing to explore a little. Agia Pelagia Beach is about half an hour away and Limanakia Beach is also not a bad day trip. If you want to stay closer to town, head to nearby Amnissos Beach.

There are a number of unique shops around town that sell everything from traditional pottery to homemade jewelry.

The peak season for travel is summer in Heraklion, so expect to see more tourists than usual. This destination is quite touristy, so in the high season it's busier than usual. You'll see larger crowds and longer lines, as well as higher prices. On the other hand, there's plenty to see and do at this time of year because everything is open.
Visiting the nearby beaches is one of the most popular things to do this time of year, so spend some time enjoying the waves and sand. You'll also find it quite easy to get around on foot, because this is a very walkable city, especially in the nice weather. How can you save money during your time in Heraklion?
We found a cheap but modern hotel right in the middle of the historic area in town. The restaurants in this area were all really good and not very expensive, too. It's easy to walk around to most places, and there are some free and cheap museums.
