Fethiye is a port city, and district, on Turkey's southwestern Turquoise Coast. It's known for its natural harbor, blue waters and numerous rock tombs including the 4th-century B.C. Tomb of Amyntas, carved into a bluff overlooking the city. Near-shore islands are popular for day trips by boat. In the south, the beach at Oludeniz is sheltered by a lagoon, and Butterfly Valley is a designated nature reserve. In 1958 an earthquake levelled the seaside city of Fethiye, sparing only the remains of the ancient city of Telmessos. More than half a century on, it is once again a prosperous hub of the western Mediterranean, and a major base for gulet (Turkish yacht) cruises. Fethiye's natural harbor is perhaps the region's finest, tucked away in the southern reaches of a broad bay scattered with pretty islands, including Şovalye Adası, glimpsed briefly in the James Bond film Skyfall. Fethiye also makes a good base for visiting Oludeniz, one of Turkey's seaside hot-spots, and many interesting sites in the surrounding countryside, including the ghost town of Kayakoy just over the hill. With all of these fabulous attributes, Fethiye is a great place to visit, and, there are also some great, budget-friendly accommodations to use as a base for exploring.
